Under the Prohibition of Female Circumcision Act 1985, it is a criminal offence in the UK to commit or aid, abet, counsel or procure female circumcision of another unless it is necessary for the physical or mental health of the person on whom it is performed. Female circumcision may not be performed for reasons of custom or ritual. If it is considered medically necessary, a registered medical practitioner must perform the surgery (defined as “to excise, infibulate or otherwise mutilate the whole or any part of the labia majora or labia minora or clitoris of another person”). Publishers asked to accept marcoms offering the procedure might want to take legal advice.
